Introduction:

Oxyfluorfen is a diphenyl ether herbicide. It is a selective pre- and post-emergent herbicide used to control certain annual broadleaf and grassy weeds in vegetables, fruit, cotton, ornamentals, and on non-crop areas. It is a contact herbicide and light is required for it to affect target plants. Oxyfluorfen targets a specific enzyme, protoporphyrinogen oxidase, in the chlorophyll biosynthetic pathway. Inhibiting protoporphyrinogen oxidase in plants leads to an accumulation of phototoxic chlorophyll precursors which, in the presence of light, produce activated oxygen species that rapidly disrupt cell membrane integrity.
